meet our Head of school, Mr. john patterson
Mr. John Patterson began his tenure as the Head of School at Liberty Christian Academy in July of 2010. John Patterson is beginning his eighth year at LCA where he has served in the Math Department, as the Executive Director of Academy Relations, and as the school’s head boys’ basketball coach.
Mr. Patterson was born and raised in central Illinois where his family has owned a family business for over 90 years (Patterson Bros. Oil & Gas). Following his graduation from Williamsville Township High School (http://www.wcusd15.org/), Mr. Patterson was accepted to the United States Military Academy at West Point (http://www.usma.edu/) and graduated in 1996 as a letterman on the basketball team and as a Dean's List student. He graduated with a BS in Systems Engineering. (http://www.usma.edu/se/SitePages/Systems%20Engineering.aspx)
Following his graduation from West Point, Mr. Patterson served the majority of his active duty Army committment at Ft. Stewart, GA, in the 3rd Infantry Division. While serving, Mr. Patterson was a highly recognized officer. He was ranked as the top Lieutenent in 1-9 Field Artillery (http://www.stewart.army.mil/units/2BCT/unit19FA/home.asp) and was rated below the zone as he achieved the rank of Captain. He served five years active duty in the U.S. Army and served in Kuwait and Iraq during Operation Desert Fox in December of 1998. Following his active duty requirement, Mr. Patterson accepted a position with Ethicon (a Johnson and Johnson Company) as a medical equipment sales representative with the Wound Management division. While with Ethicon, Mr. Patterson was a leader in sales after a very short time with the company. Mr. Patterson then took a job in Kalamazoo, Michigan, with Stryker Leibinger, as a product manager. As a product manager, Mr. Patterson managed a 14 milllion dollar budget and managed 75 territorial sales representatives.
However, with all this corporate success, Mr. Patterson continued to feel called to his passion: basketball and young people. In 2002, Mr. Patterson realized this calling by becoming the head basketball coach and math/computer instructor at Liberty (Bedford) High School in Bedford, VA. Following his three year stint at Liberty (Bedford) High School (http://bedfordlhs.sharpschool.net/), Mr. Patterson was hired by the former Dr. Jerry Falwell Sr. in 2005 to serve at Liberty Christian Academy as the boys' head basketball coach and math instructor. In his first year, Mr. Patterson took the "new look" Bulldogs to the state semifinals. In 2007, given his marketing experience, Mr. Patterson was asked to create and implement a new office at LCA called "The Office of Academy Relations." This office was primarily responsible for admissions, marketing, and fundraising. While in this position, Mr. Patterson was influential in increasing enrollment 121%, raising support for a new $300,000 state of the art playground, and creating and implementing an ESL progam for international students. At the same time, Mr. Patterson coached the Bulldogs to over 100 wins and 6 consecutive state playoff births.
Additionally, Mr. Patterson directs the John Patterson basketball camp which has been recognized as the best summer basketball camp in the Lynchburg area. Last year, 185 boys and girls in incoming grades 1st-9th attendent the camp. It is sold out every year!
